Logistics at Sea: A Breakdown of Vessel Types
Following the government's call to all parties to drive the country’s economic growth, more and more people now know about logistics.
Logistics means a host of activities that focus on managing the distribution of goods from one place to another to meet people’s needs or demands. This means logistics plays a vital role in economic growth.
According to Anthony Brewer, logistics activities that are effectively and efficiently managed can accelerate economic growth and boost the country’s productivity. Optimal logistics performance results in better economic growth.
That being said, realizing an effective and efficient logistics process is no walk in the park. This is particularly true for Indonesia, as the country has many islands and is surrounded by water.
Such a challenge can be tackled with the right choice of transportation modes, among which is cargo ships. Cargo ships are the best choice for goods distribution through water transportation.
7 Logistics Vessels
Up to the present, there are several vessels used to transport various loads. These vessels serve both in-country and overseas transportation. Below are the seven commonly used cargo vessels.
Container Vessels
Container vessels are designed to transport standard containers filled with electronics, clothes, and food items efficiently. This vessel can transport many containers in one go.
General Cargo Ships
This vessel is designed to transport goods that cannot be accommodated in containers, such as heavy machinery, excavators, or bulk commodities like coal, iron ore, etc.
Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) Ships
This vessel’s door can be opened and closed and is specifically designed to load and unload automotive cargo such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, and heavy machinery. This vessel has two types: Pure Cars and Truck Carriers (PCTC) and Pure Car Carriers (PCC).
LNG Carriers
This vessel is typically used for transporting liquefied natural gas or LNG. LNG is usually used as industrial fuel due to its efficiency and eco-friendliness.
Large Crude Carriers (LCC)
This large tanker usually transports crude oil in large volumes. Supported by advanced technology, it guarantees fire safety and security during shipment.
Reefer Vessels
This vessel is equipped with a cooling system and is used to transport perishable items such as food products and beverages. This vessel frequently crosses the seas as the demand for food distribution is rather high.
Break Bulk Vessels
This vessel is designed to transport heavy and bulk items such as iron ore, coal, and salt. Offering large capacity, this vessel plays an important role in the mining and energy industries and the export and import of mining commodities.
Choosing a Reliable Logistics Service
If you plan to ship or import goods, it’s important to consider the type of vessel used. Factors like cargo volume and shipping costs should be considered.
Choosing a reputable logistics company is crucial for efficient shipment. Ensure the provider is professional and has a good reputation.
